In early 2015, I first met President Hyepin Im of Korean Churches for Community Development (KCCD) also known as Faith and Community Empowerment (FACE). I do not doubt that I met Hyepin Im in my life, and I believe that it is God's preparation.
I am commissioned as a missionary for homeless people from October 30, 2012 from my home church, Glory Church of Jesus Christ. By the request of Senior Pastor Richard Shin, I was to take care of hundreds of homeless people at the church backyard on Hope Street. As I went out to the world outside the church fence and missioned homeless people, my pastoral life became full-fledged to the community.
Most pastors do their job of caring for members in their church, but I have tapped the doors of society because of homeless mission. As I met and helped a lot of homeless people, I gradually got the help I needed. It opened a new chapter where I met city authorities, governments, and community leaders who oversee homeless people and shared my experiences with them. When I needed help, a woman who appeared to me was recognized as a young and very famous social figure who was the President of KCCD/FACE, Hyepin Im.
I told her about my concern and she said that is exactly what KCCD/FACE is doing for the community, especially Korean church leaders who need help and training to be successful in reaching out to the community. So, she invited me to the KCCD’s 8th National Lighting the Community Summit on May 18-20, 2015 in Washington D.C., at the Hilton Garden Inn under the theme of “Shining Our Light, Building Our Leadership and Future Together.”
I visited the White House for the first time in my life and it was a great time to meet many influential politicians and social figures there and to learn a lot. An unforgettable fact of my life was that on May 20, in front of the White House delegates and about 70 people, I made a public speech at the White house debriefing center that the United States and the U.S. government helped our Republic of Korea in many ways, and also 130 years ago, America sent the first American Christian missionaries of Appenzeller and Underwood. I am thankful that the Republic of Korea became a Christian nation and now send the second-most Christian missionaries in the world, after the United States. To express my appreciation on behalf of KOREAM, I told them that I would serve homeless people, who are the biggest social problem of America today. And I delivered this vision President Barack Obama and it became a precious memory of my life.
This is what KCCD/FACE President Hyepin Im shared after the 8th National Lighting the Community Summit - “Your support & partnership allowed the summit to be a great success in gathering over 150 Christian leaders, elected officials, church leaders and other community leaders to engage in a conversation about how to partner and work together in addressing challenges existing in both the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community and the greater community at large. We were pleased to have participants from over 49 different cities representing 13 states who came from various ethnic groups such as Koreans, Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Cambodians, Taiwanese, Indians, African-Americans, Whites and Hispanics as well as international participants from Singapore and South Korea. Many participants shared that through the Summit and the historic White House Briefing, they gained invaluable information on resources that they can leverage to address challenges in their communities, new ideas of how to partner with government, corporate and foundation stakeholders, great contacts in various offices to follow up and stay in touch.”
I am truly grateful to KCCD/FACE for being so trained in this content and for the wide range of ministry work it does with many community leaders, politicians, religious leaders, and especially homeless people.
In addition, I am really grateful to KCCD/FACE for doing such a wonderful job, free of expenses and money, while providing a lot of the education and training. Hyepin Im is the first woman to be a member of a community woman and decided to be my mentor. And I decided to continue to train and learn from her and KCCD/FACE.
